About This Tour

Did you know that Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil for almost two centuries — and even served as the capital of the Portuguese Empire for a period in the early 19th century? That legacy still shapes the city’s Historic Center today.

This private walking tour takes you through the heart of old Rio, where grand architecture, cultural landmarks, and centuries of history come together in one of the city’s most fascinating areas. Along the way, you may visit iconic places such as Confeitaria Colombo, founded in 1894, and the Royal Portuguese Reading Room, internationally recognized for its extraordinary beauty.

As you walk through streets lined with colonial, imperial, and early republican buildings, you’ll discover the stories behind key moments that helped shape Brazil. More than a sightseeing experience, this is a deeper cultural journey through the historic soul of Rio de Janeiro.

One of the greatest advantages of this experience is its flexibility: the tour can be fully customized to include the attractions, landmarks, and themes that interest you most within Rio’s Historic Center. Whether you want to focus on history, architecture, coffee culture, religion, photography, or iconic institutions, we can adapt the itinerary to create a private experience that feels more personal and meaningful.

If you are looking for a private cultural tour in Rio de Janeiro with depth, flexibility, and local insight, this experience was made for you.

Traveler Reviews

My husband and I spent three weeks in Rio de Janeiro and came across Rio de Janeiro by Cariocas by accident, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We went on three different tours, each one offering something unique and memorable.

Our adventure began with a tour to Sugarloaf Mountain, which ended with a delightful happy hour. This was where we met Monique, our guide, who made the tour incredibly fun and informative. Her enthusiasm and knowledge really set the tone for our trip, and by the end of the tour, we knew we had to book more trips through her company.

Next, we opted for a sunrise tour to Christ the Redeemer. Paulo was our guide for this one, and he ensured we had a truly unforgettable experience. Not only did we get to witness the breathtaking sunrise over Rio, but since we finished earlier than expected, Paulo also took us to Parque das Ruínas and the Selarón Steps. These additional stops were such a treat and really added to the richness of our day.

Our final tour was a walking tour of the historical center with Larissa. She took us through many fascinating spots and shared so much about the history and culture of Rio. Our conversations with her were a highlight, giving us a deeper understanding of local life and history.

Overall, I’m so glad we found Rio de Janeiro by Cariocas. Booking through them was incredibly easy, and their communication was top-notch. We always felt like we were in great hands. If we ever get the chance to return to Rio, we would definitely love to do more tours with them. Highly recommended!

If you want to experience the true Rio you neeeeeeeeed to do it with Monique!! A real highlight of our South America adventure. Check it out on Google Reviews.
