About This Signature Package

The Rio Off the Beaten Path Travel Package was created for curious travelers who want to experience Rio de Janeiro beyond its most famous postcards.

Instead of following a conventional sightseeing itinerary, this journey explores the neighborhoods, cultural traditions, landscapes, and everyday rituals that shape local life. Stay in Santa Teresa, discover Rio’s Afro-Brazilian heritage in Little Africa, experience the city by bike or from the waters of Guanabara Bay, and feel the energy of an authentic samba night in Lapa.

The Extended Package also includes a private visit to Ilha da Gigoia, a car-free island community surrounded by canals and mangroves in Barra da Tijuca.

Combining private cultural tours, carefully selected shared experiences, trusted local partners, bilingual professionals, and personalized support, this package is ideal for couples, friends, and independent travelers looking for a more authentic and meaningful connection with Rio de Janeiro.

This is not simply a journey through different parts of the city. It is an invitation to understand how Cariocas live, socialize, celebrate, move through nature, and connect with their neighborhoods.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 – Welcome to Santa Teresa

Arrive in Rio de Janeiro and enjoy a private transfer from the airport to your boutique Bed & Breakfast in Santa Teresa, the city’s bohemian and artistic hilltop neighborhood.

After check-in, begin your experience with a relaxed private walking tour through Santa Teresa. Explore cobbled streets, colorful historic houses, local art studios, independent shops, and viewpoints overlooking the city.

Along the way, your local bilingual guide will introduce you to the history, personalities, architecture, and creative spirit that have shaped one of Rio’s most distinctive neighborhoods.

Finish the experience with drinks and traditional Brazilian snacks at Bar do Mineiro, a beloved neighborhood institution and a classic Santa Teresa meeting place.

Day 2 – Choose Your Carioca Outdoor Experience

At the confirmed departure time, choose one of three shared outdoor experiences:

Option 1 – 12 Beaches Bike Tour

Depart from Downtown Rio for a small-group guided bike tour along the coastline of Guanabara Bay and the Old Port area.

This scenic route reveals beaches that once played an important role in Rio’s history, including some that have disappeared from the modern landscape. As you cycle, discover stories connected to nearly 500 years of Rio’s beach culture and enjoy unexpected perspectives of the bay, the historic waterfront, and the city. The experience lasts approximately three hours and takes place mainly along flat bike paths, making it the lighter of the two cycling options.

Option 2 – Tijuca Forest Mountain Bike Tour

For travelers looking for a more active experience, join a small-group mountain bike tour through Tijuca Forest. Cycle along forest roads, navigate uphill sections, and reach scenic viewpoints that remain largely unknown to most visitors. Along the way, learn about the history, biodiversity, and environmental importance of this protected natural area. The experience lasts approximately three and a half hours and requires good physical conditioning, confidence on a bicycle, and comfort riding through more demanding terrain.

Option 3 – Sunset Sailboat Tour on Guanabara Bay

For a more relaxed experience, set sail from Marina da Glória on a shared sunset sailboat tour through Guanabara Bay.

During this approximately three-hour experience, admire Rio de Janeiro from the water as the late-afternoon light transforms the city’s mountains, coastline, historic forts, and iconic landmarks.

Relax on board, feel the ocean breeze, and enjoy drinks and snacks while watching the sun set over one of Brazil’s most famous bays.

After your selected experience, enjoy the evening at leisure.

Day 3 – The Roots and Rhythms of Rio

Discover the historical and cultural foundations of Rio de Janeiro during a private tour through the Historic Downtown and Little Africa.

Walk through streets, squares, cultural landmarks, archaeological sites, and historically significant areas connected to Rio’s colonial past, the African diaspora, port history, samba traditions, and Afro-Brazilian identity.

Your local bilingual guide will share stories about the people and communities that helped shape Rio’s music, spirituality, celebrations, social movements, and cultural diversity.

In the evening, experience the city’s living musical heritage during a private Samba Night in Lapa.

Visit a carefully selected venue and immerse yourself in the rhythm, spontaneity, and social atmosphere of an authentic samba circle. More than a musical performance, this is an opportunity to experience samba as Cariocas do: as a living tradition built around community, memory, celebration, and connection.

Day 4 – Farewell from Rio or Island Life at Ilha da Gigoia

Standard Package – Enjoy your final morning in Santa Teresa at your own pace. Depending on your flight schedule, take a quiet walk through the neighborhood, visit a local café, browse independent shops, or simply relax before departure. Your private transfer will take you from the accommodation to the airport with comfort and peace of mind.

Extended Package – Travel to Barra da Tijuca for a private experience at Ilha da Gigoia, a small car-free island community hidden among the canals and mangroves of the Tijuca Lagoon. Cross to the island by boat and discover its narrow pathways, lush vegetation, local homes, waterside restaurants, and relaxed community atmosphere. Enjoy a boat ride through the surrounding lagoon, observing the mangrove ecosystem, local wildlife, and the striking contrast between the island’s intimate atmosphere and the modern cityscape of Barra da Tijuca. There will also be time to explore the island and, optionally, enjoy lunch at one of its local seafood restaurants.

Return to your accommodation after discovering one of Rio’s most unexpected local communities.

Day 5 – Farewell (Extended Package only)

Enjoy your final morning in Rio at leisure. Your private transfer will take you from the accommodation to the airport according to your flight schedule.

Leave the city carrying more than photographs: stories, flavors, rhythms, landscapes, and a genuine connection with the communities and traditions that make Rio de Janeiro unique.

We create experiences that are safe, personal, warm, and connected to the real Rio — from iconic landmarks to hidden corners, local culture, nature, food, music, and daily life. With our Signature Packages, we bring this same approach into complete travel itineraries, combining accommodation, transfers, experiences, and local support into one curated journey.

This package is ideal for curious travelers who prefer local culture, neighborhoods, history, music, nature, and everyday experiences over a conventional checklist of tourist attractions. It works particularly well for couples, friends, independent travelers, repeat visitors, and first-time visitors who want a less traditional introduction to Rio de Janeiro.

Most services included in the package are private, including airport transfers, the Santa Teresa walking tour, the Historic Downtown and Little Africa tour, the guided Samba Night experience, and the Ilha da Gigoia tour included in the Extended Package. The bike tours and Sunset Sailboat Tour are shared small-group experiences operated by trusted local partners.

Private round-trip airport transfers are included in the package. However, transportation to and from the daily tours and experiences is generally not included. This itinerary was designed around walking tours and shared activities that begin at designated meeting points. Guests must make their own way to the confirmed meeting location, where they will meet the guide or activity provider. The meeting point and departure instructions for each experience will be shared in advance. This applies to the Santa Teresa Walking Tour, the Historic Downtown and Little Africa Tour, the Samba Night experience, and your selected Day 2 activity: the 12 Beaches Bike Tour, the Tijuca Forest Mountain Bike Tour, or the Sunset Sailboat Tour. The exception is the Ilha da Gigoia experience included in the Extended Package, which includes private round-trip transportation. Private transportation for the other activities can be added upon request and will be quoted separately according to the accommodation location, number of travelers, and selected experiences.

Yes. This package can be adapted to your travel style, pace, interests, and preferred level of comfort. We can adjust activities, suggest restaurants, upgrade hotels, add extra nights, or include additional Rio by Cariocas experiences.

Some activities, especially outdoor and sea-based experiences, may depend on weather or operational conditions. When needed, we will suggest adjustments or alternatives to preserve the quality and comfort of your trip.

Traveler Reviews

We had the most amazing private tour of Rio with Monique. Her passion for the city, its people and its culture is infectious, her intimate knowledge makes the tour so authentically Rio and we managed to skip lines and avoid the big crowds due to her organisation! She also took us to an amazing bar she has been going to for 13 years and the feijoada and caipirinhas were the best in the city.
If you want to experience the true Rio you neeeeeeeeed to do it with Monique!! A real highlight of our South America adventure. Check it out on Google Reviews.
