Sailboat tour through Guanabara Bay

Enjoy breathtaking views on this boat tour through Guanabara Bay.

Discover Rio de Janeiro from a different angle, feeling the wind in your face and enjoying the unique experience of being on a sailing boat.

With two-thirds of sunny days a year, mild temperatures, excellent wind conditions, striking relief, and spectacular beaches, Rio is a paradise for boating. We are sure you will be delighted too!

And to make this experience more special, our boat trips are carried out on sailboats. Versatile, autonomous, strong and safe, sailboats are designed and built to interact with nature in favor of man. Silent, they often allow marine animals to approach, curious, to observe us. Upon seeing the dolphins, our participants cannot contain their excitement!

I have never sailed before. Do I need to have previous sailing experience?

No. Previous experience is not required. Nevertheless, our guests are always invited to participate in the sailing maneuvers, if they are interested. If not, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the boat tour.

Can we join other groups in your sailing boat tours?

Yes, this is not a private tour. We have two groups almost every day, mornings and afternoons! Please check our availability by assessing our reservation system on this website.

What other activities are there? Can we swim or snorkel?

Yes. We will indicate the best spots for those activities. Usually outside of the bay and towards the outer islands, where the quality of the sea water is better.

Do we stop and anchor anywhere?

Yes, we may stop and anchor during our longer private boat tours. Otherwise, if the conditions are right, we may stop for a quick swimming.

Where to we sail to? Are there any specific routes?

The decision on which route to take follows the Captain´s reading of the prevailing wind and sea conditions as well as his understanding of the experience and preferences of the guests aboard. Nevertheless, the most frequent destinations are: Niteroi City and Rio Harbor, Itaipu or Copacabana beaches on our shorter sails; and Ipanema beach and Cagarras archipelago on our longer boat tours.

What can we expect to see on the outer islands? Do we see any marine life?

All outer islands in Rio are environmentally protected. As such, disembarking, as well as fishing, are not permitted. You will see abundant marine birds. Frigate birds and local seagulls called “atobás” are the most visible. If we are lucky, turtles, dolphins (May thru August), whales (2nd half of the year), rayfish, may be spotted during our longer sails. Fish is abundant and the reason for many competitions held throughout the year.

How safe is it to sail?

Some people say sailing is “as easy and safe as long as you keep your head down when tacking”! That is probably true. Sailing is very safe! As far as the sailboat is concerned, we will walk you thru some of the critical spots you should be aware of and also how to behave once we’re underway. Sailing is only as safe as we make it! And, at Sail in Rio, we are very conscious of this. Like any other outdoors sport, understanding and respecting the elements of nature is key for safety. We subscribe to the best weather forecast websites so that we have precise local information and make your boat tour as safe as possible.

What safety equipment do you have onboard?

As an open ocean class sailboat, Kamehameha is equipped with all required safety and rescue items such as life vests, rescue flares, fire extinguishers, VHF radio, Epirb (emergency position indicating radio beacon) and others.

Will we get seasick? How do we prevent it from happening?

Seasickness is very personal. It may be minimized though by adopting good habits 24 hours prior to sailing like sleeping well, eating right and balanced and avoiding alcoholic drinks. If push comes to shoves, we will have you steer the boat for 10 minutes and you will be cured. Guaranteed!

Can we bring food and beverages? Do we get any aboard?

Yes, feel free to bring your favorites aboard. We will provide you with refrigerating iceboxes and kitchenware as needed. Included in the price is water, one round of welcome drinks and little appetizers. Other food and drinks may be arranged upon request and at an additional cost.

What should I wear or take on the tour?

Comfortable, light/ white color clothing and white sole deck shoes or running shoes are the best alternatives. A light jacket is recommended, especially if you are sailing at the end of the day. Bring swimming wear in case you decide to go in the water.

Are there any age limitations?

Not at all. We have boarded toddlers as well as elderly people on many different occasions. In these cases, we take special procedures/ precautions during embarking/disembarking as well as during our boat tours to ensure maximum comfort and safety for all aboard.

Is there a discount for children?

Children under 10, accompanied by parents, enjoy a 50% discount.

Do you pick it up and return it to my accommodation?

No, this experience does not include transportation to the meeting point. If you want to add transport, please get in touch with our team.

What are the preventive measures against covid-19 adopted on the tours? Do I need to be vaccinated or follow them?

As part of our commitment to Safe Travels, we follow all security measures recommended by the UNWTO and city laws. All our guides and drivers are fully vaccinated, and our vehicles are sanitized.

As per the national rule, visitors must be vaccinated or have a negative COVID test to enter the country. Face masks are no longer mandatory, but we recommend using them for people with health problems.
