Where to Exchange Money in Rio de Janeiro

One of the main questions of tourists when visiting Rio is where to exchange money in Rio de Janeiro and how is the best way to do it.

The first thing to know is that, like any other touristic city, several options are available. But to help you find them easily, we have prepared this guide with everything you need to know to exchange money in Rio de Janeiro safely and efficiently.

Local Currency in Brazil

The first thing to know is that the official currency of Brazil is the Brazilian Real (R$), pronounced hay-al or Reais in the plural, pronounced hay-ice.

Brazilian banknotes have 7 denominations: R$2, R$5, R$10, R$20, R$50, R$100, and R$200. One Brazilian Real consists of 100 ”Centavos” (₢). Brazil has 5-coin denominations: ₢ 5, ₢ 10, ₢ 25, ₢ 50 and R$1.

Be aware: In Brazil, we swap the place of the decimal and the comma. For example, $3,000.75 is written as $3.000,75.

Also, unlike some South American countries, US dollars or other currencies are not accepted in Brazil.

Using Money in Rio

Most Brazilian businesses are well set up to receive card payments, and all major credit cards are also accepted (but before you use your bank card, it’s worth checking with your bank about the fees and charges you might incur).

In Brazil, using credit cards is much more common than cash. Therefore, exchanging a lot of money in currency is unnecessary unless you do not want to use your card here. If you prefer to use cash, always have small bills with you to make change easier.

Where to Exchange Money in Rio de Janeiro?

You can exchange currency at most bank offices or a currency exchange office. You can also exchange money at the airport, but the rate you get is usually worse here. Similarly, most hotels will offer to exchange money for you but at a slightly worse rate.

The best way to get cash at a reasonable exchange rate is by withdrawing money from ATMs linked to a network that most likely includes your bank at home.

Here is a brief list of some common and reliable places where you can exchange money in Rio de Janeiro:

At the Airport

If you prefer convenience, you can exchange money at the Galeão International Airport (Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport) or Santos Dumont Airport. Currency exchange kiosks or booths are typically available in the arrival or departure areas. Just note that airport exchange rates tend to be less favorable, so it’s a good idea to exchange only a small amount for immediate expenses and find better rates nearby your accommodation.

Bank offices

Major banks in Rio de Janeiro, such as Banco do Brasil, Itaú, Bradesco, and Santander, have ATM machines at their branches and offer currency exchange services.

Visit their branches, and they will assist you with exchanging your money. Keep in mind that banks usually have regular business hours, from 10am to 4pm.

Here are some bank offices branches we recommend:

Santander – Av. Nossa Sra. de Copacabana, 590 – Copacabana
Banco do Brasil – Av. Nossa Sra. de Copacabana, 594 – Copacabana
Western Union – Av Ns Sra De Copacabana 386 – Copacabana

ATM Machines

ATM machines are called Banco24Horas in Brazil. You can find them inside Bank offices, pharmacy stores and supermarkets.

Look for machines that accept Cirrus (MasterCard) or Plus (Visa) cards. If in doubt, check with your bank to find out which Brazilian bank networks are compatible with your card.

Also, plan ahead to ensure you have enough cash; for safety reasons, ATMs are closed between 10pm and 6am each day, and the maximum withdrawal is $1,000 in most places.

Carioca Tip:

During Carnaval or high tourist seasons, the ATMs run out of cash quickly, so it is best to get there in the morning.

Consider safety precautions when using ATMs, especially on the streets. Choose well-lit and populated locations, shield your PIN entry, and be aware of your surroundings to avoid potential security issues.

You can look for dedicated currency exchange offices or, in Portuguese “” casa de câmbio.”” They are often found in popular tourist areas, shopping centers, and airports.
