How to make an authentic Caipirinha

Caipirinha is the typical Brazilian drink, which all Cariocas love! No wonder, it is one of the 10 unmissable things to do in Rio de Janeiro and one of the 7 typical drinks that you need to try.

But, while you are not coming to Brazil, how about learning how to make an authentic Caipirinha with Luiz Felipe Sandins, who is an expert on the subject?

Read the instructions below or, if you prefer, watch the video we made especially for you.

You'll need:

1 Lime
2 tbsp of sugar
50ml of cachaça (sugarcane liquor)
5-6 cubs of ice

1. Cut the lime into small pieces discarding the tips and the central part that make the drink bitter

2. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the lime pieces and use a tamper to gently extract the lime juice

3. Then add 50 ml of cachaça and 5-6 ice cubes

4. Finally, mix the ingredients in a circular motion until you feel the whole pot has cooled. Do not shake the ice on the walls of the pot. Otherwise, your drink will be watery.

Enjoy!

Carioca Tip:

Cachaça is the Brazilian drink par excellence. And you will probably find it in the main markets in your city. The brand “51” produced for exportation is delicious. But, in Brazil, our favorites are: “Salinas,” “Seleta,” “Germana,” “Boazinha,” “Leblon,” and “Ypioca Ouro.”
